Infrared heat is not only delightful and pleasant – it is also deeply effective. IR heat consists of heat rays, or heat waves, and is a natural and vital form of energy. It is invisible to the human eye, but you can feel it on your skin on a beautiful sunny day, or when you sit around a campfire with friends.

Infrared heat is actually the same type of heat that our own bodies emit – and it is precisely these heat rays that allow a heat-seeking camera to detect you in the dark.

Did you know that up to 60% of the body's heat loss occurs through infrared radiation, even in a room with a perfectly normal temperature?
When infrared heat rays hit your body, they penetrate deep into the tissues and warm you from within. This initiates a number of health-promoting processes – everything from increased circulation and pain relief to deep relaxation and better sleep.

Three types of infrared radiation

Infrared radiation is typically divided into three categories based on wavelength:

  • Near Infrared (NIR)
  • Mid Infrared (MIR)
  • Far Infrared (FIR)

The terms infrared light and infrared heat are often used interchangeably, but it is primarily the wavelength – and the purpose of the treatment – that determines what we call it. In short:

  • Shorter wavelengths, such as NIR, are close to visible light and are often referred to as light.
  • Longer wavelengths, such as FIR, emit deep heat and are referred to as infrared heat.

NIR is often used in conjunction with red light in red light therapy, which Radiant Health also does in our products, as the combination is ideal for targeted treatment of skin and tissue close to the body's surface. FIR is used in all our heating products, including infrared saunas and sauna blankets, and provides deep, penetrating heat that stimulates the entire body – from the inside out. We combine carefully selected wavelengths, either individually or in combination, to stimulate the body's own beneficial processes – with precision, depth, and documented effect.
